Parks Department Removes Play Equipment at McKenzie Park
Due to ongoing vandalism, the City of Hermiston has made the difficult decision to remove the plastic toddler play equipment at McKenzie Park. The porous nature of the plastic makes graffiti removal challenging, and repeated incidents of burning and melting have created hazardous conditions for children. The equipment was scheduled for removal this winter, but due to recent reports from the community and an opening in our parks maintenance schedule we expedited the project.
We are currently seeking funding to replace the toddler play area with a more durable structure. Additionally, the plastic bouncy bridge on the large play structure has been removed and a new solid steel bridge has been constructed and will be installed soon. This will offer a more durable and safe play feature for children.
As part of our ongoing efforts to prevent vandalism, cameras have been installed on The Arc building in McKenzie Park to monitor the area.
We understand the importance of safe places to play in our community. We encourage all members of our community to enjoy our outdoor spaces and to help protect our parks by reporting any suspicious activity and by treating these spaces with the respect they deserve. Notifications and concerns can be sent to the Parks & Recreation Department at https://www.hermiston.gov/parksrec/webform/park-watch-report-safetymaint....
Together, we can ensure Hermiston's parks remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.
