Filing Deadline for City Council, Municipal Judge Election is March 8

The filing deadline for Hermiston City Council and Municipal Judge candidates in the 2022 election is Tuesday, March 8 at 5 p.m.

The four “ward” City Council positions are up for election in 2022. Candidates must live within the ward boundaries to be eligible for the council seat. However, all registered Hermiston voters may cast votes in all four races.

As a Council-Manager form of local government, the eight elected City Councilors vote to decide on matters concerning the city during twice-monthly public meetings. They also attend special committee meetings and are invited to participate in other public events.

The Municipal Court Judge is elected every two years and must be licensed to practice law in the state of Oregon. The Judge has jurisdiction over offenses in the city code of ordinances and hears cases in the Hermiston Municipal Court.

If two or fewer candidates file to run for any of the Council seats or Municipal Judge position, the winner in the May 17 primary election will be considered the winner of the general election and take office in January 2023. If more than two candidates file, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will move to the general election in November.
